BMW is developing a system to bring a car or truck to a complete stop (safely) if the driver loses control because of health-related problems.
BMW isn’t the only company fast-tracking advanced collision-prevention systems. Volvo is working on a system called City Safety (which we tested at the New York auto show in April), and Mercedes-Benz will soon offer Attention Assist, which makes sure the driver isn’t losing attention, as a standard feature in new E Class and S Class cars. Attention Assist, said Robert Moran, a Mercedes spokesman, “monitors parameters based on steering behavior, use of controls and other measures that will tell” if the driver is losing attention.
